Much of the automotive press has released their reviews on the new McLaren F1, presented to the press in the circuit of Portimao, Portugal. The result was a consensus about the qualities of the McLaren F1 which should have left Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini worried.
The car is equipped with a 3.8 liter V8 biturbo designed by McLaren in partnership with Ricardo, mounted in central position with rear wheel drive and seven-speed gearbox, double clutch.
For a price similar to the Ferrari 458 Italia, the MP4-12C is more powerful (600 horses from 570), has more torque (61.2 Nm versus 55) and weighs less (3155 lbs versus 5467 lbs).
Regarding the competition, the untouchable McLaren F1, it is better in all measurements (acceleration from 0 to 60 miles / h in 3.3 seconds, decreasing to 3.1 with Pirelli Corsa tires, and 0 to 120 miles / h in 9.1 seconds ). The only exception is the top speed of 205 mph, lower than the 240 mph of his ancestor.
Beyond the numbers, which the journalists of the Car, Autocar, Autoblog, Evo and Inside Line was actually praised the behavior of the car on the track.
Three main features have helped: the solid rigidity of the cell monocoque carbon fiber, the incredible grip of the suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers operating assets (read here a complete analysis and illustrated by Inside Line), and the novel braking system that analyzes the decision-curve slightly to stop the wheel from the inside and encourage oversteer (rear output), instead of understeer.
